Next generation cannabinoid
from black pepper

Recent years have seen much consumer interest in cannabis and its cannabinoids, interest that continues in high growth year on year. However, market access can be problematic, and even where there is a clear regulatory path to market, prices per dose can be high. Emerging data also suggests that a section of consumers may be averse to taking cannabis-based products. In recent market-research, 28% of US consumers agreed that if a brand they liked began to sell cannabis products, it would negatively affect their opinion of the brand (Kantar Profiles/Mintel). In light of these market realities, it is clear that there is a need for an alternative that will fill the current gaps.

PhytoCann BP® is the result of a quest to create an ingredient that would be readily saleable in supplement products and, just as importantly, cost-effective. Black pepper was specifically chosen due to its long history of use as a spice and natural wealth of included components. The extract is specifically standardised to a primary cannabinoid and also to contain an 'entourage' of other terpenes - a profile purposely crafted to replicate characteristics commonly associated with cannabis.

PhytoCann BP® is a proprietary, patent pending (WO2023193052, AU2023250792, US18/849,691) extract of black pepper that is sourced from the volcanic high altitude regions on the pristine island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Available in liquid and powder grades, PhytoCann BP® is a full-spectrum terpene entourage cannabinoid preparation. Crafted via CO2 extraction, it is legal for sale around the world, solvent-free and vegan.

A wide therapeutic promise
PhytoCann BP® binds with cannabinoid receptors in the body, and while having a different structure to THC and CBD, it interacts directly with the endocannabinoid system. For this reason, and pepper’s history of use, PhytoCann BP® is known as a ‘dietary cannabinoid.’ Due to its unique properties, it promises a variety of different health benefits as it is active at the cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2R) which is present in the brain, immune system and gastrointestinal system.

Why PhytoCann BP ?

-
Highly selective for CB type 2 receptors (over type 1), which mitigates concerns around psychoactivity, e.g. in comparison with THC which is active at type 1 receptors

-
A subject of active research, the primary cannabinoid in PhytoCann BP® is being investigated across a range of therapeutic effects. Our primary focus is mood-modulation, particularly the effects on anxiety and stress and the promotion of restful sleep

Other potential areas include demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects, effects on pain and modulation of the dopaminergic system, plausible effects in the immune and gastrointestinal systems due to the abundance of CB2 receptors for which this ingredient is a strong activator.
-
Black pepper extract is legal for sale as an ingredient in Australian TGA listed medicines and products around the world.
